Weekly summary January 1 – January 7, 2012
Aquaculture: Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development encourages people to apply VietGAP standard to giant tiger prawn, whiteleg shrimp, and Tra fish farming and breed production. Farmers in Ca Mau province has a successful season of ricefield fish. In 2011, giant river prawn brought high profit for farmers in Mekong River Delta since its price is high and stable.
Processing, import and export: Provinces in Mekong River Delta exported more than 600,000 ton of Tra fish in 2011. Seafood exportation has reached 1 billion dollar in Ca Mau province. In 2011, Seafood exportation of Vietnam has reached 6.1 billion dollar, which is 21% higher than in 2010. H’Mong Beef from Cao Bang province is now famous and very important for farmers to improve their income. Binh Minh farm in Hai Duong province has a herd with more than 500 ostriches. In this herd, more than 260 ostriches, including 165 female ostriches, have fertility. To enjoy Vietnamese Dong Cao chicken, people spend tens of millions VND to have this special chicken for Lunar New Year Holiday. According to Department of Livestock, within 5 years, 1.7 million households have give up their farming job.
Cultivation: In 2011, agricultural industry in Lam Dong province brought VND80 million/ha. The target for this development is to gain VND100 million/ha/year in the near future. From the success of Fall-Summer 2011 season, in Winter-Spring 2011-2012 season, “Large Field Model” can be expanded into 1 million hectares in provinces in the South. 2011 is a successful year with rubber industry since exporting price is high and stable. European Food Safety Authority warns to close its market with Vietnamese vegetable if it continues to detect any unqualified products.
Agriculture, Countryside and Farmers: Agricultural production in Ho Chi Minh City has reached VND11,100 billion. Prices of a lot of agricultural products decline in the west of Vietnam.
Fruit: Rambutan and dragon fruit continue to be exported to EU and the U.S. Even though this is the time for sales for Lunar New Year Holiday, prices of fruits in Mekong River Delta significantly decline.
Living and environment: A 14.5-kg Asian seabass was caught in Vam Co Tay River.
